Cancer of Unknown Primary
What Is Cancer of Unknown Primary?
Usually, cancer is diagnosed with its primary site (the organ where it first developed) identified before metastases are found. In contrast, cases in which metastatic lesions are discovered first and the primary site cannot be identified even after detailed examinations are called “cancer of unknown primary.”
Although it is not common,
- Lymph nodes
- Bones
- Liver
- Lungs
it may first be discovered through metastases to these and other sites.
For diagnosis, in addition to imaging examinations such as CT and MRI, we perform a “biopsy: tissue sampling” to evaluate the type and characteristics of the tumor in detail.
Our Clinic’s Approach to Diagnosis and Treatment
At our clinic, we treat cancer of unknown primary and metastatic tumors by combining image-guided biopsy with interventional radiology (IVR) treatment.
Image-Guided Biopsy
Using ultrasound or CT to accurately evaluate the lesion, we collect tissue samples and examine the type and characteristics of the tumor in detail.
The biopsy results provide important information for determining the future treatment plan.
Local Treatment with IVR
Depending on the patient’s condition, we combine
- RFA (radiofrequency ablation)
- Catheter treatment (such as embolization)
to provide local treatment that takes the burden on the body into consideration.
Coordination with Other Treatments
Based on the diagnosis and the patient’s condition, we propose an appropriate treatment plan, which may also include surgery, drug therapy, or radiation therapy.
When necessary, we provide care in cooperation with specialized departments and partner medical institutions.
Second Opinion Service
We also offer consultations from the perspective of diagnostic imaging and IVR for patients who have been diagnosed with “cancer of unknown primary” or a “metastatic tumor” at another hospital and are unsure about their future treatment plan.
We carefully review each patient’s condition and treatment history, and propose treatment options tailored to each individual.
