Puncture and Drainage
What Are Puncture and Drainage?
What Is a Puncture?
A puncture is a procedure in which a specialized needle is inserted from outside the body into a blood vessel, an internal organ, or a body cavity.
Everyday medical procedures such as blood draws and intravenous infusions are also a form of puncture technique, but at our clinic we apply this technique at a more advanced level, performing it for the following purposes.
Our clinic performs punctures mainly for the following purposes.
- Precision diagnosis: Collecting tissue or body fluid samples to identify the cause of disease.
- Fluid drainage: Removing excess fluid or pus that has accumulated in the body.
- Minimally invasive treatment: Precisely administering drug injections and non-surgical treatments such as radiofrequency ablation (RFA).
By making full use of ultrasound and CT fluoroscopy (real-time imaging), our clinic safely performs punctures even to deep sites that are difficult to reach visually, while keeping pain to a minimum.

What Is Drainage?
Drainage is a procedure that uses puncture techniques to guide and remove unwanted fluid, blood, pus, exudate, and other material that has stagnated inside the body.
It is performed to remove the source of infection and to relieve the pain and pressure (by decompression) caused by accumulated fluid.
By using imaging equipment in combination, our clinic controls the puncture pathway to within a millimeter, pursuing drainage treatment that is less painful and even safer.
Image-Guided Percutaneous Puncture and Drainage (IVR)
is a treatment we provide.
In this procedure, we:
- Confirm the position using imaging
- Insert a thin needle or catheter into the cyst
- Drain the fluid contents
This completes the treatment.
When necessary, we also use sclerotherapy (a treatment to prevent recurrence) in combination, aiming to suppress recurrence.

What Is Puncture and Drainage Treatment
Our clinic actively accepts punctures and drainage procedures for sites that are generally considered difficult at other medical institutions.
Precision techniques under CT guidance: Even for lesions in locations that are difficult to confirm with ultrasound, using CT equipment allows an accurate approach that places less burden on the body.
We also welcome referrals from other hospitals: If you are struggling with an abscess (a collection of pus) or fluid accumulation, please feel free to contact us.
Our Commitment as a Specialized Institution
Our clinic actively accepts punctures and drainage procedures for sites that are generally considered difficult at other medical institutions.
Our clinic serves as the secretariat of the Puncture and Drainage Society of Japan. We lead the development of more precise and safer puncture and drainage techniques based on evidence (scientific grounds), and we apply this knowledge directly to our day-to-day clinical practice.
※If you have been told at another hospital that a puncture or drainage procedure would be difficult, please feel free to contact us.
